FAQ

Below are answers to common questions when considering therapy at Smart Clinical Psychology. If this information does not address your question, feel free to call or email.

What if I need help urgently?

Smart Clinical Psychology is not an emergency or crisis management service. In cases of emergency please dial 000 immediately. If you need urgent Mental Health Support please consider contacting the Emergency Department of your local hospital, Lifeline 24 hour crisis support on 13 11 14, the 24hr NSW Mental Health Line on 1800 011 511, or your General Practitioner or local medical centre during work hours.

What does a clinical psychologist do?

A clinical psychologist has been trained in the assessment and treatment of mental health problems. We treat clients through therapy, and do not prescribe medications like a GP or psychiatrist. However, for some issues a combination of medication and therapy can be the most helpful. A clinical psychologist studies for around 7 years at university and is expected to undertake professional development regularly.

When can I see you?

Tommy is available Monday to Thursday, offering therapy session times of 9am, 10:40am, 12:20pm, and 2pm. If you would like to make an appointment please click here to contact Smart Clinical Psychology to find a session time that suits you.

Do I need to attend your practice in person?

No. Sessions are available face to face or via telehealth (video or phone call).

How long are sessions, how often do I need to attend, and for how many sessions?

Sessions are 60 minutes.

Therapy is tailored to suit each person, therefore the number and frequency of sessions will vary from client to client and will be discussed during your sessions. Ongoing sessions can be arranged on a weekly, fortnightly or needs basis. Both short-term and long-term options are available depending on your needs and desires. It is advisable that, if you are wishing to receive ongoing therapy, you book a number of sessions in advance. The frequency of sessions will be discussed once your therapy plan has been agreed upon, usually at your first or second appointment with Tommy.

Is it confidential?

Yes. All psychological therapy with adults is confidential. Tommy will ensure you are informed of your rights to a confidential service at the beginning of the initial appointment.

What should I expect from my first one or two sessions?

The first one or two sessions are likely to focus on initial assessment, often including discussions and questionnaires, to form a shared understanding of your challenges, goals, and life history, leading to the collaborative development of an appropriate and individualised therapy plan.

What can I expect in subsequent sessions?

Subsequent sessions focus on therapy, to help you to manage life’s challenges and move toward your goals. Therapy is individualised and evidence-based, drawing on a number of theories and models, including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR). Therapy often includes strategies during sessions, and action plans for outside of therapy sessions, to support your mental health and wellbeing.

Do I need a referral?

No. A referral is not required if you wish to attend as a private or self-referred client, in which case you will be responsible for paying the full fee of $230 for each session. However, it can be very helpful to see a GP about your mental health difficulties so that any potential physical or medical causes can be assessed properly and treated if necessary. GP’s and psychiatrists will also be able to make appropriate decisions regarding medication, should this be required. If you wish to claim a rebate from medicare, then a mental health treatment plan and referral from your doctor are required. If you wish to claim a rebate from your private health fund, please contact your fund to determine if a doctors referral is required to access the rebate.
