Tommy Smart

Clinical Psychologist

Tommy was born and raised in New Zealand, where he completed a Master of Clinical Psychology, Master of Arts (Psychology), Graduate Certificate in Arts (Psychology), and a Bachelor of Defence Studies, at Massey University. Prior to moving to Australia in February 2019, he worked in a public health setting, at the Child Adolescent and Family Service of Hawkes Bay Hospital, providing psychological assessment and therapy to children, adolescents and adults across a range of challenges. He was then employed in a private psychology practice in Newcastle for two years, working with adolescents and adults experiencing a broad range of mental health conditions. He founded Smart Clinical Psychology in 2021.

Tommy served as a commander in the full-time New Zealand Army for ten years, followed by five years in the NZ Army reserve. During his military career he fulfilled various leadership roles in New Zealand, Afghanistan and Egypt. He gained experience in command and leadership, problem solving and planning, peacekeeping, as well as counselling and mentoring soldiers from a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds.

Tommy enjoys working with a diverse range of adult clients overcoming various life stresses and challenges. He takes a balanced, client-focussed, and nonjudgemental approach, acknowledging that we all have vulnerabilities and strengths. He utilises evidence-based treatment models including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR), tailoring therapy to meet client needs. In addition to working with clients, he continues to engage in regular professional supervision and professional development.

Tommy has full registration as a clinical psychologist (PSY0002261055) with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). He is registered to provide clinical psychology services through Medicare.

Tommy is passionate about the outdoors, boating, family, and working with clients towards their meaningful life.
